Introduction
Animal Farm is a political satire as it satires the Russian revolution of the Bolshevik revolution. Orwell satirizes the men by calling him a pig, and the ways he adopts to beguile others are also ridiculous. The satire Animal Farm has been used to reveal what socialism in the Soviet Union was. The author has used different animals to show how people were mocked by Tsar to create a classless society.
The Character of Mr. Jones
As Mr. Jones, I would like to inform all animals that no animal will be allowed to stage the rebellion. I would also tell all animals that they will not establish the animal farm. Although I am a drunkard, I will focus on maintaining the farm and ensure that all animals on the farm do not engage in misconduct. I will also not offer any food for any animal that is starving. Therefore, I request all animals to ensure that they have plenty of food before they die of starvation in the farm. The manor farm that I run will not offer any support to the animals. I will also ensure that all animals are beaten by my men to avoid them from gaining their freedom. Although the animals have rebelled, I will ensure that I fight back to get the farm again. I also know that all animals do not want me to return to the farm since they are willing to fight against me.
Character of Squealer
Although squealer is viewed as just a pig in the farm, he has powers has he serves as second-in-command to Napoleon, the farm’s president. Squealer is very convincing and has convinced many animals about particular issues on the farm. For instance, squealer manipulates other animals to ensure that pigs can better control them (Orwell, 2017). In many cases, squealer has made animals disbelieve what they have seen and believe the deceits he tells them. His language and effective communication skills have also helped him to convince other animals. For example, squealer stated that “Jones is a cruel, careless drunkard who let his life and livelihood to be taken from him because of those things.”
In case Jones would have failed to leave the farm, Squealer would have convinced other animals to demonstrate and ensure that he left the farm. Squealer has convincing power, and many animals would have adhered to his arguments. Squealer is also one of the fat pigs on the farm and is excellent at public speaking, which makes it easy for him to convince the animals. I think if the pigs do not eat the apples and drink milk, they will be ill. The picture below shows squealer's reactions when convincing other animals about the need to let the pigs drink milk and eat apples.
Dialogue between boxer and Squealer
Squealer: You need to be careful Boxer.
Boxer: Why
Squealer: Because you jones will end up selling you
Boxer: But I have not done anything wrong
Squealer: Let me assure you that Jones will sell you once you lose your power
Boxer: How do you know?
Squealer: Don’t you see what he does to the dogs?
Boxer: What happens?
Squealer: Jones ties a brick around the neck and throws them to the pond once they grow old and toothless.
Boxer: Is he that heartless?
Squealer: Yes, he is a drunkard and does not care.
Boxer: I understand, and I have to be careful.
Historical Context
The author has used the characters to show how people experienced challenges in Russia during the revolution. Many people experienced difficulties during the faulty system that was being experienced in Russia. Orwell has also used animals in the play to represent people who had an impact on the political structure of the Soviet Union. For instance, the author has used Mr. Jones to describe Tsar Nicholas II, whom the Russian revolution banished. The book has also been of considerable significance to people who like learning about Russian history. Animal Farm is also an allegory and a satire about the Russian revolution of 1971 that was characterized by false qualities of class struggle (Orwell, 2017). The dictatorship experienced in the Soviet Union was also presented in the novel, whereby Orwell has used animal characters to show how they struggled on the farm. For example, some of the animals lack food, and the drunk Mr. Jones does not offer any food to them. The example represents how people struggled in Russia, while their leaders did not care about their struggles due to dictatorship.
Moreover, the animals in the novel want a revolution and making efforts for the control of animal farm from humans. The efforts to control animal farm from human represents how the Russians struggled to ensure that the revolution was achieved. Snowball has also been used by Orwell to stand for Trotsky, whereby his struggle to teach the animals how to read and reform represented the five-year reform that was introduced by the communist party in Russia. One can also relate the character of the dog in the play with K.B.G, who was the secret agency of Russia, and his purpose was to support the rulers and publicize the valves of the leaders. Therefore Orwell has crafted Animal Farm in a manner that one can relate it with the struggles experienced in Russia during the Bolshevik revolution.
